When I am not working in the salon, I am always looking for new skills and techniques to help me be more intentional with my designs. I believe the basics lay the foundation for boundless creativity, and can open the doors for anyone. In my early career, I worked under conditions where the essentials were often not available, and optimizing limited resources was key. I found myself under the impression that I had to reinvent the wheel, while traveling to dollar stores, hoping to find wall paint brushes so I could paint a balayage. My first attempts at being a professional, while not having the “official” tools were terrifying. When I found myself working at certain NYC salons, I discovered that the skills I learned from the stylists there were based in how they pioneered the industry, which was about to pulse into a super-organism. Hypothesis, experimentation, previous backgrounds, and a similar lack of resources lead to guarded secrets, creating reputations separating mad-scientists from hair-geniuses. All of this can put you on the latter when you have discovered the basics. Hair is more than what is on the surface: it is art, science, history, and being able to think outside of the box confidently despite possible failure. I thank the stylists before me who gave hair a foundation, as I continue to be bold while pursuing further creativity and knowledge.
